Building a Strong Spiritual Foundation

The word foundation is defined as “an underlying basis or principle” – it’s what you start with and build on. Without a strong foundation, buildings would crumble – if they could even be built – and they wouldn’t be able to withstand the challenges of their environment for very long.

A Spiritual Foundation is very much the same for us human beings – what underlying spiritual basis or principles do we build our lives upon? If those principles are not strong, positive, and deep, not anchored in what resonates authentically within your heart and your spirit, the foundation won’t last – it will crumble when a “load” – a stressful situation or a challenge – is put upon it.

You can build and rely on a strong spiritual foundation to help guide your approach to new or challenging situations because that stable base empowers you to withstand the winds of change and gives you the strength to create consistent and positive outcomes in your life.

Your spirituality involves identifying and upholding values that are black stacking stones on gray surfaceimportant to you – these values also help to form your spiritual foundation. Living a Spiritually Authentic life – one that incorporates those values -produces consistency. Although the outcome of situations or challenges can be unpredictable, your response to each scenario is predicted by what you value – what principles make up your spiritual foundation.

Here are a few affirmations you can use to help you build a strong spiritual foundation:

Honesty is the core of my spiritual existence. It allows me to approach new situations with peace of mind.

When you commit to being honest, you avoid becoming emotionally overwhelmed by the possible outcomes of a situation. Being committed to honest living enables you to clear your mind of doubt and stress. Acting from a Spiritually Authentic place allows you to be accepting of whatever happens, and to face each situation from a position of empowerment, not victimhood.

My Spiritually Authentic values underscore my relationship with friends, family, co-workers and employers. I commit to being kind and transparent with them, and to be open to their perspectives.

Although you may sometimes slip in the heat of the moment, you’re able to acknowledge your errors and to keep moving forward on your journey toward Spiritual Authenticity. It’s easier for you to take responsibility and to apologize for acting against your spiritual beliefs because you’re committed to their guiding power over your life.

Tough decisions are easy for me because I can rely on my proven, tested value system in the decision-making process. I avoid complicating my life by sticking to a Spiritually Authentic, guided approach.

Knowing who you are, what your spiritual foundation is, and implementing those foundational principles on a daily basis make it much easier to live your values. There’s much less game-playing and deception when you’re living a spiritually authentic life. Questions are answered by what you KNOW to be true for you, and what strengthens your foundation, in addition to what helps you keep building on it.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. How do new experiences impact my spiritual foundation?
  2. How easy is it for me to stick to what I believe when situations get challenging?
  3. How do I know when it is time to alter my belief system?
